AMA Strategic Plan 2009 - 2014

Forward

The mungbean industry continues to offer a great deal in terms of the benefits of mungbeans as a functional, high quality food as well as the benefits mungbean cropping delivers to the growers’ land.

This Strategic Plan for the industry is designed to respond to challenging and changing growing and market environments and create a path for industry development. It is the result of a combined effort by all sectors of the industry who are to be congratulated on their willingness to put individual interests aside for the benefit of the whole industry.

Major achievements from the last strategic plan (2003 – 2008) include:

Over the next 5 years, the Australian Mungbean Association (AMA), the Australian Sprout Growers Association, R&D partners, growers, processors, exports and brokers will focus on a collaborative approach to expanding the industry and continuously addressing industry priority issues.

Yours sincerely

Stephen Donnelly
Past President
Australian Mungbean Association

Strategic Plan 2009 - 2014

This Strategic Plan for the Australian Mungbean Industry for 2009 to 2014 charts a course for industry development covering:

This Strategic Plan has a strong focus on partnering at industry level and at local grower level to support the growth and the development of the mungbean industry.

The industry has achieved much in the past 5 years and now plans to build on this strong platform to expand the industry in the future.

Industry Size and Value

In 2006/07, the Australian mungbean industry was estimated to have production of 38,974 tonnes of mungbeans and, of this, 1,325 tonnes of mungbeans were used for sprouts.

At current market values, industry production in 2006/07 was estimated to be valued at $27.3 million. Total industry value is $42.6 million when key industry inputs are taken into account.

The industry is estimated to employ 2,634 people and, based on input output analysis, generates employment of an additional 247 people in the broader economy. Comparisons of the mungbean industry and other primary production sectors show that it generates relatively more employment opportunities compared with other crops.

At the mungbean industry’s targeted production of 50,000 tonnes per annum; the industry would have a turnover of $54.2 million and create 3,552 jobs
